Valorant Rank Distribution in December 2024 Episode 9 and players percentage

The rank distribution and percentage of players by tier in Valorant in December 2024, Episode 9. Learn the true value of your skill, and the info shared by all the Riot dev team. Updated monthly.

Source of the data

Finally, Riot released their API for Valorant, so starting from December 2020 I will provide official rank data based on the whole player base.

There are several websites that gather and share these data, and after examining the most reliable ones, I concluded that there are almost no differences among their tools.

The statistics in the graphs and the tables below consider all the competitive games in any region.

I will update the data periodically, so we will have an idea on how the rank distribution evolves over time, and if there is any change.

All the Valorant ranked seasons

I had to split this analysis into multiple articles due to the excessive number of tables and graphs, which resulted in very long loading times.

Rank distribution - Episode 9

Patch 9.05

We have updated the existing ranked and Premier restrictions to expand to all team-based modes so that penalized players will be restricted from queueing up in any team-based mode for disruptive behavior.

Ranked facts

This is a collection of ranked insights shared by @RiotEvrMoar, the former Senior Competitive Designer for Valorant. They address most of the questions one might have about the ranked system.

What determines your Rank Rating (RR)

4 things determine your RR: Win/Loss, Round Diff, Perf Bonus, and Convergence.

Convergence multiplies your total RR by how far your MMR is from your Rank. It is the strongest win your Rank is more than 3 away from your MMR. Past that you double rank up.

That means if you don’t double rank up you are within 3 ranks to your MMR. If your points start normalizing, getting about the same points for a win/loss, that means you are probably at your MMR. Once you “converge” to your MMR it’s very hard for your rank and MMR to separate.

Usually, you only have your rank below your MMR after placements. We ask you to “Play X matches to prove your rank”. It makes it so you can’t coast and you must play matches to prove your Rank; you may have been super bowl champ last year but you have to do it again this season.

Games required to reach your MMR

On average, it takes 20-40 games to have your Rank reach your MMR. That means, if you play 20-40 ranked matches during an episode, you should be equal or close to your MMR. This is the easiest way to know if you’re close to your MMR other than equal +/- RR.

The longest we’ve seen for it, for a player to reach their Rank/MMR, is 100 games. We think these may be manipulated, like purposeful lose streaks, or just really unlucky. So go slam some games, try your best, and you should be at your MMR after 40 games.

Dodging maps, variance, dueling high ranked players

When determining what map you will play, we look at every player’s last 5 games and choose the least played map. If you dodge a map, because it’s your least played, you have a high chance of getting it again! Plus, you get -3 RR every time you dodge.

Playing more matches does not make it harder to climb due to “averages’’. Instead of total matches played, we have “Variance” which is how consistent you are performing at your current MMR/Rank. Less than 35% of alts reach the same rank as their main!

If you are performing as expected, your Variance will shrink, which makes your MMR harder to move. But if you start performing outside of expectations, your Variance opens up and makes your MMR move fast! This is replacing the idea of total matches played MMR average.

This is why winstreaking, and why winning duels against those high ranks, really helps you climb!

Avoiding the highest-ranked enemy may help you live longer, but it doesn’t help you climb. When you win duels, if you can take out a higher ranked player, you will gain more MMR from them than if you were to defeat the lowest skilled player on the enemy team.

Valorant characters

How the matchmaker works

Each queue has its own MMR, but when stepping into ranked for the first time, we look at other playlists (like unrated) to get an idea of where to start you. Using other modes and placements, we get a good idea of where you belong.

This is also why we work really hard to combat bots/purchased accounts! It can throw off the matchmaker and sets up an account with manipulated MMR. If you have an alt, our matchmaker should be able to move your MMR quickly, unless it’s purchased and manipulated.

Our matchmaker does not try to single out a high-skill player. We get the player/group that was in queue the longest, look at their MMR and grab all players near them in MMR. We test team combinations and choose the fairest.

When looking at team combinations, we have rules for how far apart each player/teams MMR can be, which forces the matchmaker to make 50:50 matches. If we can’t find a fair match for that group, we throw out the match and try with the 2nd player/group in queue the longest.

Groups and AFK

Grouping up with a lower-ranked friend, even in 5 stacks, will not negatively impact your MMR or RR gains! This is because your RR gains are based on your MMR, not the difficulty of opponents you are facing.

We do not soften RR loss due to AFK for two major reasons, Toxicity and Manipulation. If you were to lose less RR due to an AFK, bad actors would bully the lowest player on the scoreboard in an attempt to get them to AFK so they would lose less RR.

Is there a smurf queue in Valorant?

No smurf queue, and if one account is ranking up faster, it’s because it’s doing better. We don’t have a winners or losers queue. Some people bring that up a lot; there is no benefit to this and just reduces fair match making (which is our goal, to have the fairest matches).

Lower ranks use more encounter MMR, and higher use more Win/Loss MMR. Encounter cares more about who you beat in duels, win/loss cares about who you win the match against. Players that win duels, and win matches, will climb faster than players that just do one or the other.

The only reason an account would get stuck is that the performance is different on that account. You can look at TenZ and see him take an account to Radiant MMR in 20 games. MMR is just a ladder: beat people and you steal their spot and climb the ladder.

Rank distribution - Episode 7

Patch 7.7

After listening to your feedback, we have decided to remove the recent rank restriction made to 5 stacks that was implemented in Patch 7.06. We know how important it is to play with your friends and your need for flexibility in order to do that.

However, we still recognize that boosting is a risk to competitive integrity and are working on an appropriate long term solution that doesn't impact your ability to play with friends in a 5 stack.

Patch 7.6

There has been a wave of competitive rank boosting with bots and real players. In an effort to protect against this abuse, we have introduced restrictions where Ascendant players and higher can only invite players with Platinum rank and higher to their competitive party.
