Focus on defense. I know that Symmetra can be played also in attack, but in these guides I will show only placements for the defender team. Note that some of them might work even for the attackers.

Safe placements. The Shield Generator has an unlimited duration and will keep working until destroyed. The enemy team will try to find and break it as soon as possible, so it is essential to place it in a hidden and “secret” location.

The best spots. I will show you some of the best placements in each map that work even at high SR, and alert when you should avoid an overused or risky one. Beside these locations, there are other viable options depending on your skill rating, but I skipped the obvious ones.

Position and range. The main spots have also pictures showing the max range of each Shield Generator.

No turret climbing or Mei required. For this series, I decided to not feature spots that can be reached only via Mei’s Ice Wall or turret climbing.

Shield Generator or Teleporter. I will not argue about the perfect choice on each map and point, but just explain the best spots for the former. Of course, some of these locations can be used also for the latter.

Please note. I used Sentry Turrets to mark most of the secondary or wrong Shield Generator placements. Unfortunately, it is necessary to restart the lobby to place a new one.

First Point

On this point, there are no “secret” and hidden locations. I will show you two spots where the Shield Generator might survive, and explain the placements to avoid.

This first spot usually works well. The Shield Generator covers this entire section of the map, up to the choke. As you can see, it is not possible to detect it from either sides of the road, but a player might come here for the health pack.

Alternatively, you can use this room. The range is pretty much the same, but I have never been lucky with this place.

  • All the buildings in the area on the other side of the choke are unsafe.

  • Placing the generator on the high ground could work at lower ranks.

In my opinion, there aren’t solid spots for a long-lasting Shield Generator, and it is preferable to use a Teleporter.

Second Point

The ex-spawn of the defender’s team. I regard this placement as one of the best in the game for the Shield Generator. Literally no one ever comes here, and they can’t hear the noise of the generator from outside.

The range is perfect as it doesn’t cover just a small portion of the road past the first point. You could even place the generator in the room immediately before (last image) for extra range, but I believe it isn’t worth the risk.

If anyone will destroy your Shield Generator, you can blame this guide :P.

My secondary placement. It is well-hidden and with a respectable range. You might prefer it if the opponents are pushing too quickly and you can’t go underground without being seen.

Some Symmetra players suggest this placement, but I dislike it. Considering the two great locations spotlighted before, placing your Shield Generator here makes no sense.

Also, heroes moving on the high ground will almost certainly notice the noise produced by the generator.

Third Point

The only viable option on this point. The range is solid, but everyone knows about this spot, so you will need to guard it from flankers.

I suggest to not put the generator in this room. People love to create a “room of death” packed with turrets, but the location is obvious, and long-range attackers can shoot at you from the other side of the road.

It is possible to use the underground area also to protect the third point, but truly the range isn’t enough: it covers the first section, but doesn’t reach the point at all.

Note: if you place the Shield Generator near the fences, it will disappear, and your ultimate charge will be depleted. Probably a bug.
