Skulz’s Dota Competitive Hero Tier List September 2019

Skulz’s Dota Competitive Hero Tier List September 2019

The Dota 2 Competitive Hero Tier List for September 2019 includes data from 7.22f and 7.22g, for a total of 220 games. The heroes are split in five groups.

  • All heroes are arranged in five tiers based on their draft rate. The tiers are viewed as clusters of data, and each hero is placed in the one they are closer the most.

  • The requisites for each tier never change. The goal is offering a neutral comparison that shows how the meta evolves over time.

  • The win rate has no effect on the tiers, but is included for further info. The tiers depend only on drafts (picks + bans), and aren't affected either by the win rate of a hero, or by their performance in pub matches.

This tier list contains all pro matches played from September 1st to 29th during patch 7.22f and 7.22g, including ESL One Hamburg 2019 Qualifiers.

Past Tier List: August 2019

Mirana is a TI veteran

Usually, Mirana becomes a meta hero around The International, because she is a very flexible pick who can be played in literally any role and position.

If you first-pick Mirana, the opponents don’t acquire any knowledge about your strategy, which is a great perk in a competitive environment. They are also somewhat forced to draft/play differently because her skillset synergises with several heroes.

Mirana did not appear from nowhere, in fact she has been a solid pick for a long time. The recent patch 7.22e also buffed Sacred Arrow with more base damage (which is indipendent from the range of the stun) and a tiny cooldown reduction at higher levels.

  • Rescaled cooldown from 17 on each level to 18/17/16/15.

  • Increased base damage from 50/140/230/320 to 80/160/240/320.

Strengths and success in pubs

Currently, Mirana is the most picked hero at 5k MMR with a 32.8% pick rate and 55.6% win rate.

One of the reasons behind her success in pub is that a perfect team communication is not strictly necessary. An expert Mirana provides great help to her team with a correct usage of her skills.

Everyone knows how to behave during Moonlight Shadow. This ultimate is self-explanatory as it grants invisibility and movement speed bonus, so your teammates won’t have issues as long as they have some map awareness, and that’s a skill that most players at Ancient and Divine already acquired.

  • This ability can be used to initiate a fight, escape from a lost battle, and even save teammates who risked their life as they moved in unsafe places.

  • Facing a Mirana with the level 25 talent -70 Moonlight Shadow Cooldown is a very traumatic experience because the ultimate has a 30 seconds cooldown and a 18s duration, so she has a global ultimate with a mere 12s downtime.

Sacred Arrow is one of the best single-target stuns in the game (if you have the skill). The ability to land long-range arrows makes the difference between an average and a veteran Mirana.

You can easily harass the lane opponents thanks to your long-range attacks, and exploit Sacred Arrow to score kills. This is not limited to her own lane as she is an excellent roamer, so the arrow has a great impact also in the mid game.

Overall, the long-range stun is extremely helpful at all stages of the match, and you can even use it to scout pathways where the enemies might be hiding and waiting for your approach.

Mirana is best suited for position 4

While Mirana is a very versatile hero, I must point out that position 4 is her best placement.

I recommend to not play her as a right-click core and to not buy Hand of Midas. The Aghanim’s Scepter is a viable item and could be used to split-push lanes later on, but it should never be your priority, and it is a poor choice if your team is behind: you will steal a lot of farm from the cores, so eventually they won’t be able to carry the game as they will lack resources and items.

Use her attack range to harass, Sacred Arrow to gank from the fog, roam and teleport wherever you are needed, and maintain the control of the runes. Don’t forget to communicate with your team if you have a good setup for an arrow.

Even as a support/roamer, she can easily get some levels and farm, and in the late game the team will have a better hero than a traditional position 4 support.

Mirana’s skill build

The image below shows the four most popular skill builds used in competitive games during September.

Almost all the pro players followed the first most popular skill build. It is quite simple to explain as you require only one level into Sacred Arrow and Leap for gank and mobility (levelling up Sacred Arrow increases its base damage but not the maximum stun duration, which is 5 at all levels).

Recent nerfs

After TI9, Mirana was hit by the post-TI nerf patch, which landed with the 7.22g update on September 6th.

Sacred Arrow

  • Base damage reduced from 80/160/240/320 to 40/120/200/280.

  • Bonus damage increased from 140 to 180.

Moonlight Shadow

  • Mana cost increased from 75 to 125.

Icefrog reverted the Sacred Arrow base damage buff brought by version 7.22e, and lowered it even more. This change is completely understandable, and on the other hand they increased the bonus damage, which rewards skilled players able to secure a long-range arrow.

The mana cost increase of Moonlight Shadow is an attempt to reduce the constant use of this ability and to improve the pick rate of the other level 25 talent.

Most bought items by pros

These are the most bought items on Mirana by pro players during September:

  • Arcane Boots: 47

  • Mekansm: 36

  • Guardian Greaves: 24

  • Urn of Shadows: 23

  • Force Staff: 22

  • Spirit Vessel: 16

  • Eul’s Scepter of Divinity: 13

  • Vladimir’s Offering: 8

  • Aghanim’s Scepter: 8

  • Blink Dagger: 6

  • Pipe of Insight: 5

  • Ghost Scepter: 5

The list doesn’t include consumables and basic items.

Arcane Boots are pretty much mandatory as you need a source of mana, and you can easily upgrade them into Guardian Graves.

Force Staff is always very useful in the hands of a support to save your teammates from dangerous situations, and combined with Leap you can escape from almost any gank.

Urn of Shadows is a great early item if you plan to gank and roam a lot because it gives you heals and extra damage. Later on, you can upgrade it into Spirit Vessel, which counters several heroes with healing and regenerative effects.

Vladimir’s Offering is a teamfight oriented aura, and Aghanim’s Scepter is a nice tool if you have the chance to farm, push, and fight.

Beside the general utility, Eul’s Scepter of Divinity and Rod of Atos are viable choices if you require mana, and to raise your chances to land a successful arrow. Personally, I prefer Eul’s, but many players in pubs love Atos because of the extra range (1,100 vs 575).
