Overwatch Season 17 most played heroes by competitive tier - July 2019

The top 15 most played Overwatch heroes in this meta: July, Season 17. Find out the most popular support, tank, and DPS heroes at each skill tier.

Blizzard has not released an Overwatch API to access the data of all players in the game, so this article displays no official info. There are several websites that gather data from their users, and I decided to utilize the statistics provided by Overbuff as it is the most popular one.

Jeff Kaplan shared the official data on season 9, and the figures were mostly similar to the ones available on Overbuff. We can trust the data even it is isn’t completely accurate.

I have published updated data (based only on PC players) during each season. Check out all the previous meta reports.

Road to role queue

Season 17 will end sooner than planned (on August 12th) because Blizzard will introduce Role Queue with a special beta season.

I believe that further analyses on the current meta are superfluous as several heroes will be affected by balance changes in order to work in a forced 2/2/2 environment.

Nevertheless, I have gathered all the data and produced my usual graphs, but honestly I believe that most Overwatch players are so excited about the upcoming role queue that they are not tryharding anymore in the present competitive mode.

The top 10 most picked heroes of the meta at GrandMaster have not changed at all if compared to the previous month, so you can check out the explanations on Orisa, Roadhog, tank and support’s popularity, McCree, and Dual Sniper meta, that I have already provided starting from May.

Doomfist in top 15

I will talk briefly about Doomfist as he rose to the edge of the top 15 at GM with a 56% win rate.

Doomfist received no buffs since March, so one could ask the reason behind his increased pick rate in a meta dominated by Orisa.

Doomfist is an odd character in the Overwatch roster, and only a limited number of players have been able to master him, so we must start with the assumption that most Doomfist mains at GM are highly skilled with this hero, which contributes to a solid win rate independently on the team faced.

  • Certainly, the Orisa + Roadhog combo completely shuts down Doomfist, but even at very high ranks you can’t always find an excellent level of communication and teamplay.

  • Individually, Doomfist is a poor pick against Orisa, and also Roadhog somehow counters him with Chain Hook, but Roadhog doesn’t have enough damage to kill him alone, so Doomfist will often be able to escape.

  • In our meta, Doomfist can just completely ignore Orisa in team fight, and pick off a support or a DPS player.

Moreover, being a top 15 picked hero at GM means having just a pick rate above 2% - which is not gigantic. Snipers (Widowmaker, Hanzo, McCree) and Genji are monopolizing the damage role in most matches.

Symmetra is still included among the supports because of the statistical tool used. Removing her would have caused problems with the data.
