Overwatch Season 16 ranked Tier List and Meta report - June 2019

The Overwatch Ranked Tier List shows the most popular heroes during June, Season 16. Find out the most successful support, tank, and DPS heroes in this meta.

Based on popularity. The tier list is based exclusively on the popularity of a hero in ranked games. The win rate is considered only to determine the most outstanding heroes in a particular tier.

No pro data. The performance of a hero when used by pro players and teams doesn’t influence the tiers.

General and rank-based meta. The best picks at GrandMaster can differ a lot from the ones at Gold, so I produced both a general ranked tier list and many rank-based ones to point out the meta differences in each rank.

Only PC. This list includes no data from console.

Blizzard has not released an Overwatch API to access the data of all players in the game, so this article displays no official info. There are several websites that gather data from their users, and I decided to utilize the statistics provided by Overbuff as it is the most popular one.

Jeff Kaplan shared the official data on season 9, and the figures were mostly similar to the ones available on Overbuff. We can trust the data even it is isn’t completely accurate.

I have published updated data (based only on PC players) during each season. Check out all the previous meta reports.

McCree’s sustained DPS

There is one development that is worth to note: the potential rise of McCree in the charts. While we can’t notice it with the monthly data displayed in our graphs, his pick date doubled during the last week.

It is still early to figure out how well he fares in comparison with the other popular DPS choices (Hanzo and Widowmaker), but so far he almost reached them in usage while getting a slightly higher win rate.

Patch 1.37.01, released on June 18, boosted his damage output:

Peacekeeper

  • Primary fire recovery reduced from 0.5 seconds to 0.42 seconds.

Casual players might have overlooked this change, but it results in a 16% increase in fire rate and DPS. The buff was even more overwhelming on the PTR client as there the primary fire recovery was reduced to 0.4s, which is equal to almost 25% more DPS.

McCree requires a team that can enable him

I don’t think that McCree will become a very popular hero at low ranks, but this buff will surely affect his pick rate at GrandMaster and in the pro scene.

McCree is a rather difficult hero to play - not just for the individual skills required - but mostly because of the teamplay necessary to enable him, which is impossible to achieve in a disorganized lineup. We can find such a degree of cooperation only from high Diamond upwards.

As a comparison, a DPS such as Genji (which must master lots of mechanical skills) is able to shine at most ranks because he can make the difference even playing solo, thanks to his skillset.

McCree’s DPS versus Hanzo’s Storm Arrows

We can easily compare the impact of McCree’s DPS increase brought by the last patch with the introduction of Hanzo’s Storm Arrows. Of course, McCree’s primary fire doesn’t produce the burst damage of Storm Arrows, but it still gives him a worthy sustained DPS, which increases the number of scenarios where he is a viable pick.

Hanzo is forced to save Storm Arrows for specific encounters. For example, if your team is in dire need to destroy quickly the shield of the enemy’s Orisa, or if you must deal with the D.Va or Winston players who jumped on your rear lines, threatening to kill your supports or other squishy heroes.

On the other hand, even if McCree doesn’t have that burst damage, he can just keep firing his new “machine gun” and inflict damage constantly. This is not an ability with a cooldown.

Interaction with Flashbang and aiming problems

Flashbang has a 0.7 seconds stun duration. Before, with a 0.5s shot recovery time you had only 0.2 seconds at your disposal to line up the headshot. Now, you have almost 0.1s more, which makes a big difference at very high ranks and among pros: they were already used to hit the headshots regularly, so this buff helps their consistency.

There are only two downsides to the buff:

  • You will spend more time reloading the gun.

  • You have less time at your disposal to aim for the next shot.

In pubs, many players will miss more headshots than before due to the increased speed. We build our muscle memory via training, so even such a small difference can cause problems.

McCree players will need time to adjust their habits, but they will surely notice the DPS increase. At the end of the day, if you can shoot more, you also have more attempts to land a headshot in a shorter amount of time.

Finally, I think McCree might become a better DPS choice than Hanzo thanks to his consistency, but it is also hard to pass on Hanzo completely because he has other perks - such as his mobility - which gives him an innate positional advantage on some maps.

Symmetra is still included among the supports because of the statistical tool used. Removing her would have caused problems with the data.

D.Va in the Orisa’s lineup

Generally, D.Va works well with any main tank in Overwatch, and that’s the reason high-ranked and pro players never stop playing her.

Roadhog is undoubtedly the best combo partner with Orisa, but D.Va is also an excellent choice depending on the needs of the team

  • If the team lacks damage, Roadhog is the preferable choice. Of course, D.Va doesn’t have a poor damage, but Roadhog gives the team the chance to get many pickoffs with the Halt! + Chain Hook combo.

  • The D.Va played in the Orisa’s lineup is a defensive one. If the team has already lots of damage, D.Va becomes a better choice than Roadhog because of the peeling potential, the versatility, and the extra defense brought by Defense Matrix.

    • If there is proper communication within the squad, you can activate DM instantly when Orisa’s Protective Barrier is on cooldown, so the team will receive no damage.

D.Va also makes up for Orisa’s greatest weakness: the complete lack of mobility. She can deal swiftly with the flankers harassing the rear line and the snipers contesting the high ground.

This is extremely useful on defense because Orisa can keep her bunker position on the high ground, which gives an enormous advantage on some maps.

No meta changes

June confirmed the data we analyzed in May.

I believe we need a substantial patch to alter the current trend, and considering that Blizzard will probably release a role lock system at the end of OWL (in 3-4 months), I do not expect drastic changes during the summer.

These are the main points that are influencing the current GrandMaster meta:

  • Orisa and Roadhog as the main tanks.

  • Decline of Reinhardt and Zarya.

  • Double sniper meta.

You can read more about them on the May meta report.
