Focus on defense. I know that Symmetra can be played also in attack, but in these guides I will show only placements for the defender team. Note that some of them might work even for the attackers.
Safe placements. The Shield Generator has an unlimited duration and will keep working until destroyed. The enemy team will try to find and break it as soon as possible, so it is essential to place it in a hidden and “secret” location.
The best spots. I will show you some of the best placements in each map that work even at high SR, and alert when you should avoid an overused or risky one. Beside these locations, there are other viable options depending on your skill rating, but I skipped the obvious ones.
Position and range. The main spots have also pictures showing the max range of each Shield Generator.
No turret climbing or Mei required. For this series, I decided to not feature spots that can be reached only via Mei’s Ice Wall or turret climbing.
Shield Generator or Teleporter. I will not argue about the perfect choice on each map and point, but just explain the best spots for the former. Of course, some of these locations can be used also for the latter.
Please note. I used Sentry Turrets to mark most of the secondary or wrong Shield Generator placements. Unfortunately, it is necessary to restart the lobby to place a new one.

Hanamura
First Point
Standard, solid, but overused spot. The generator can be placed also near the health pack, but the range is pretty much the same. It protects both the entire point and the defenders at the choke.
Maybe a long time ago this was an excellent placement, but now everybody knows it. It could still work at lower ranks.
I don’t want to include Mei’s Ice Wall locations, but for your info this is the best spot on point one. A Shield Generator in the room above is well-hidden and can’t be reached by many heroes.
Keep it in mind if you are playing Pharah and there are both Symmetra and Mei in the enemy team.
Some players consider this a strong placement, but I disagree. It does cover choke and objective, but is also easily spottable. I suggest you give it a try and see how people react to it in your games.
If the opponents just rush towards the usual spots on the left side, they might not notice it. Beware of the noise made by the generator as it is clearly detectable from the other side of the wall (third image).
In my opinion, there are no other perfect placements on Hanamura if we want both safety and a good coverage. Still, giving priority to the former, there are some options like the one presented in the image above.
In my games, the opponents rarely found this Shield Generator, and maybe it was discovered because they used the big health pack nearby. The relative security has a cost: as you can see from the three pictures illustrating the range, the generator covers only a portion of the choke and about a half of the point.
Another example of coverage traded with safety, but I do not suggest this placement. The Shield Generator is well-hidden behind the bridge, protects your teammates at the main door, but doesn’t reach the point at all.
To be honest, this spot works better for a Teleporter.
Never place the generator in the first and second areas as they are in plain sight. Situationally, the third and the fourth might work depending on your opponents - not everyone expects a generator there. Note that they can hear the noise produced by the last one from the staircase.
Second Point
The second point has only one good place for Symmetra, just outside the spawn. It may appear as a cheap solution, but it is a reliable position that covers almost the entire dojo and a good section of Balcony (the high ground area in the third image)
Average ranked players are aware of this position, but the generator is easily defendable and should survive as long as your team is alive.
Lots of players still put the Shield Generator behind this wall. Don’t do it! Everyone knows this place, and it is also very simple to destroy. Your turrets alone won’t protect it as the enemies can just flank it from the staircase on the left.
