Skulz’s Dota Competitive Hero Tier List July 2019

The Dota 2 Competitive Hero Tier List for July 2019 includes data from 7.22d and 7.22e, for a total of 349 games. The heroes are split in five groups.

  • All heroes are arranged in five tiers based on their draft rate. The tiers are viewed as clusters of data, and each hero is placed in the one they are closer the most.

  • The requisites for each tier never change. The goal is offering a neutral comparison that shows how the meta evolves over time.

  • The win rate has no effect on the tiers, but is included for further info. The tiers depend only on drafts (picks + bans), and aren't affected either by the win rate of a hero, or by their performance in pub matches.

This tier list contains all pro matches played from July 1st to 28th during patch 7.22d and 7.22e, including DOTA Summit 10.

Past Tier List: June 2019

Spirit Breaker is not a throw pick

I think that Spirit Breaker is very underestimated by casual players. He is considered a YOLO hero who mindlessly charges the opponents.

Honestly, this is a common behaviour when he is used by inexperienced players, but he can be extremely impactful in the hands of a veteran.

Map awareness, knowing when and where to charge, and when to stop or keep going, are the skills that make the biggest difference between a successful SB and a feeder.

Pro and pub data

Considering all the pro games played in July, Spirit Breaker is a top 5 hero.

Instead, if we examine only the data from the latest high-tier tournament of the month (DOTA Summit 10), he has become the most contested hero in the game with an 80% draft rate and an excellent 65% win rate.

In pubs, SB scored a positive win rate at all ranks, and in particular he is also the 7th most played hero at 5K+ MMR.

What makes Spirit Breaker a fearful hero

Spirit Breaker has always been regarded as a meat-shield. His life had no value: everyone expected him to jump on the enemies, unleash his skills (if not disabled), and die afterwards.

His strength and usefulness spiked up following the buffs of the past patches.

  • Astonishing base stats. At level 1, Spirit Breaker has 780 HP, 4.7 armor, 4.1 health regeneration, and 60‒70 attack damage. You will hardly find a better hero to trade hits with in the early game.

    • Spirit Breaker can hold his place even in a 2vs1 situation, and can overwhelm weak heroes 1vs1 without Tangoes thanks to his massive health regeneration.

    • Do not be afraid to approach the melee carry and hit them; Greater Bash is frightening in the laning phase.

  • Map omniscience. With Charge, Phase Boots, and Bulldoze, he can reach over 1K movement speed to travel quickly from one side to another of the map every 10 seconds.

    • Do not be passive and selfish. Whenever a fight take place, you can reach the location in a few seconds and potentially turn around the battle (if you can lend a hand). The enemies must be afraid about your constant pressure and presence.

Status resistance

Bulldoze is one of the main reasons behind Spirit Breaker’s popularity in pro games. This skill has also been buffed recently in 7.22: it grants up to 32% movement speed and 70% status resistance bonus for 8 seconds. For example, a 2-second-long stun will only last 0.6 seconds on him!

In Dota 2, disables counter anything, but with a 70% status resistance SB can basically ignore them. The opponent team can either waste precious abilities on him, or suffer his crowd control skills and constant bashes.

Note that both Nether Strike and Greater Bash pierce the magic immunity provided by Black King Bar, so SB can potentially disrupt the action of the enemy carry and cores.

Most bought items by pros

These are the most bought items on Spirit Breaker by pro players during July:

  • Phase Boots: 61

  • Bracer: 59

  • Urn of Shadows: 43

  • Spirit Vessel: 24

  • Medallion of Courage: 22

  • Vladimir’s Offering

  • Black King Bar: 11

  • Tranquil boots: 10

  • Drum of Endurance: 10

  • Solar Crest: 10

  • Pipe of Insight: 9

  • Glimmer Cape: 8

  • Blade Mail: 7

The list doesn’t include consumables and basic items.

  • Sentry Ward: 548

  • Observer Ward: 361

  • Smoke of Deceit: 91

I have listed the wards separately because I want to make clear what’s Spirits breaker’s role nowadays: you are not a carry who requires farming items such as Maelstrom, or Moon Shard to bash more (due to such builds, Spirit Breaker is still considered a throw pick at some ranks).

Spirit Breaker is an aggressive ganker, a roamer, but also a support. He must help the position 5 with consumables, and generally he should be the one dewarding because he can find out where the wards are placed by examining the enemy’s reaction to his charges; and if ganked while dewarding he can just charge away to safety.

The most bought items by pro players are aura and supportive ones: the greediest item on this list is Black King Bar, which probably has been bought in games where the enemies had an overwhelming amount of disables, so SB couldn’t rely only on Bulldoze.

Items such as Echo Sabre and Shadow Blade are very niche, particularly in a competitive environment. The former has been bought zero times in July.

Dealing with Spirit breaker

Fighting an experienced Spirit Breaker can be a very stressful experience because he plays with your mind: you are never safe, he will punish you every time you try pushing a lane.

Teamplay and proper wards are the best ways to deal with his aggressive gameplay, but the standard ward spots don’t work well as you need anti-SB ward placements.

  • Putting a ward in the jungle beside the lane is quite useless because you will notice him too late to escape.

  • You want to acquire vision on deeper spots in the jungle to detect him in advance when he charges from his base or from another lane. Even a few seconds more can make the difference between life and death because you need the time to retreat under tower or to teleport away.

Do not push lanes unless you have vision and/or abilities to disengage safely. If you have no vision, disables, and escapes, give up on farming that risky lane, or at least do not do it alone but ask the help of the supports. With the right heroes you might even bait Spirit Breaker and counter gank him.

Spirit breaker is an offensive hero

Spirit Breaker must keep ganking unaware targets on the map to gain an advantage for his team, plus gold and experience for himself.

If you counter him during the laning phase, he won’t turn into a troublesome opponent later on. Also, note that a very aggressive SB is often underleveled and underfarmed even after scoring several kills, so in many games you will be able to come on top even if he has been a big nuisance early on.

After the early game, moving as five for smoke ganks or to get objectives (such as destroying towers) will minimize Spirit Breaker’s impact in the mid game because he will have no chances to gank, and he is very weak at defending towers and counter pushing.
